Sweet Success Program

DO YOU WANT TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE WITH YOUR LIFE? DO YOU WANT TO HELP OTHERS IN A WAY THAT REALLY MATTERS? SWEET!

By becoming a regular donor to Flour to Empower’s subscription program, you directly help people who are suffering from traumatic brain injuries.  You help them get access to activities, new friends and new experiences – and most of all, to slowly rebuild their confidence in their worth as human beings.

Our innovative program is set up like a club. Our members work on projects that match their interests and capabilities while meeting their individual goals which ranges from completing a mailing, to writing our monthly newsletter, to working in the bakery.

(That’s where you come in!)

To thank you for your valuable and much-needed donation of just $38 per month, our members bake and send you a fresh, delicious sweet treat each and every month.  It might be our fabulous Double Chocolate Cake or a tasty batch of Chocolate Pecan Caramels, but it will be sent to you with our sincere gratitude for your compassion. Every month, tucked inside your goodie box, you’ll find a note from someone working to overcome their brain injury. That member will tell you how your donation is making a difference in their life. You will know you are doing something special.

All baked goods are made in our licensed, on-site bakery in Elmhurst, Illinois by trained and supervised people who are using the baking program to build their confidence after their injury.

(If you’re nearby, you can come by to pick up your thank you gift and purchase that day’s treats right from our counter. Or just stop in to say Hi!)

Here’s what your $38 per month does at our Clubhouse:

Provides self-esteem building activities to help members regain speech and social skills

Gives each member the chance to participate in their choice of “real life” activities, from computer tasks to photography to baking and more

Encourages members to try new things and aspire to levels previously out of reach

Enables the members to get out of the house for a change of scenery, social interaction with people who “get it”, and experience a change of pace – most members tell us being at the Clubhouse is the highlight of their week!

Your kind donation of just $38 a month makes a real difference in their lives – and the lives of their families and care takers.  Real progress is possible, and our unique, award-winning program helps members grow to their fullest capability.

Thank you for joining our Flour to Empower Donation Program.

Home-Style Banana Bread

There’s just something about banana bread that says “Home”, isn’t there?  Our nut-free banana bread brings out the best of this universally favored fruit.  Try warming this tasty loaf up in the oven for a few minutes, or pop a slice in the toaster for a quick, delicious breakfast treat. With or without butter, banana bread just feels so nutritious you’ll find ways to justify one more slice…and then another.

April

Apple Pecan Party Cake

Can a cake be a work of art? Ask your mouth when you savor your first bite of our Apple Pecan Party Cake. This extremely popular recipe is chock full of apple chunks and pecans and then baked to perfection.  As beautiful to look at as it is delicious to eat, this cake will make any day feel like a special occasion.

May

Chocolate Sour Cream Bread

Sour cream is the secret ingredient in this spectacular chocolate bread.  Did you know that bakers use sour cream to add moisture to any baked item? In this case, it swirls into the lavish amounts of cocoa we use and combines to make a melt-in-your-mouth result.  You might find yourself wishing it was May every month!

June

Perfect Tang Lemon Cake

If you love lemon, we’ve got your cake!  Our chief patissier fussed and adjusted this recipe so that you get just the right amount of lemon in every bite, just enough aroma to remind you of lazy summer days sitting on Grandma’s front porch swing, sipping lemonade with your cousins and planning your next adventure.  Not too sweet, not too sharp – perfectly refreshing.

July

Carrot Berry, Berry Good Cake

This is one berry, berry good cake! Who would guess that carrots blended with berries could create such a taste sensation? Fireworks on your palate, praises from everyone at the table.  This cake will go out with a bang! And the fact that it is delivered right to your door so you don’t have to turn your oven on this month? Well…we think that’s what independence is all about.

August

Zucchini Pineapple Bread

Inspired by the hearty zucchini, ready to be picked fresh from the garden this month, and paired with the sweetness of pineapple straight from Hawaii, this tasty bread is luau-wow ready.  Definitely great for breakfast – but we strongly recommend you take a second piece to work with you so you’re not distracted all day thinking about it sitting there in your kitchen, whispering to you.

September

Cider Celebration Cake

The weather gets cooler, the kids are back at school, the trees start turning on the autumn festival of colors. Why not create a special day this month to celebrate the first day Back at School, or leaving for college, or just because there’s the first chill in the air with our Cider Celebration Cake?  Apple cider gives this cake its little hint of tartness, contrasting delightfully with the rich, buttery cake. The perfect way to ring in the change of seasons.

October

Pecan Skulls/Day of the Dead/Candies

“Dia de los Muertos” in Spanish, the “Day of the Dead” is a time to celebration the love you shared with your dear departed.  Traditionally, Latin American people take a picnic to the gravesite to “share” the meal with their family, telling stories of those who have passed on, and to remind one another of the special connection of family.  Our pecan skull candies are the perfect way to connect with your family anywhere, because once you set them on the table, no one will be late for supper at your house.

November

Pumpkin Cake

This luscious cake smells fantastic and tastes even better!  The pumpkin and fragrant spices combine to create a richly satisfying cake that delights all the senses.  You’ll be thankful when you get this cake in the mail, and your family will be thankful when you serve it. And PS: If you’re in charge of bringing a dessert to the holiday dinner, voila! What could be easier – or more deliciously appropriate – than this beautiful cake?

December

Ho-ho-holiday Candies

Warning: you won’t want to hand these out to carolers.  Give them the store bought kind. With these, you and your family can curl up on the couch with some hot chocolate or mulled cider and connect, talk about your day and your plans for this festive season.  What fun to have fresh baked goods in the house that you didn’t even have to make yourself!

We hope you will have enjoyed this year of sweet thank-yous from all of us at Flour to Empower, the social enterprise bakery of Synapse House.  Our sincere thanks to you and all your family for your very real contribution to helping all of our Clubhouse members stretch their skills and reconnect with meaningful, confidence-building work.
